Software Selection and Contract

In addition to the actual implementation project, already the decision in favour of a standard software is assuming increasingly critical significance for the success or even continued existence of a company.

When it comes to ERP applications and also CRM, SCM or document and workflow management solutions, these will have a sustainable impact on the value adding chains, on (digital) interaction with customers and suppliers, on the precision and efficiency of planning, production and logistics, and therefore on the entire competitive ability of a company. Given the large volume of investment required, this impact can frequently be felt for a decade if not longer.
On the other hand, the supply market is constantly changing. New software companies are emerging, existing ones disappear from the market or join forces with competitors. The pressure of declining demand and growing competition not only makes conditions fiercer but frequently also results in increasingly dubious business principles with which the "black sheep" of the software industry force their products onto the market. Untenable promises in terms of time, quality and investment volume, the use of inexperienced and poorly qualified introduction consultants or constant subsequent negotiations to increase their own sales are just a few examples encountered in practice.

Software functionality is no longer a unique selling feature. Increasingly important decision-making criteria include the efficiency of the software provider, the costs (TCO), and the suitability for functional and technical integration in existing architectures.

The success of a project depends on choosing the right implementation partner. This entails making an analysis and evaluation of cooperation scenarios and financial stability.

The examples show that a meticulous, critical selection process based on tenable "evidence" of delivery ability and efficiency is what is needed, rather than purely verbal promises and up-market presentations.

But even the best prepared decision is only as good as the corresponding contract, which must provide transparent clarification of the legal positions, with clear and viable stipulation of the agreed obligations and conditions, defining corresponding penalties if necessary, with clearly agreed procedures to implement the contract in the introduction project (contract management).
